The highest COVID-19 infection rates in El Paso County are increasingly concentrated in ZIP codes in the eastern part of the city and county, an El Paso Matters analysis shows. In the first few weeks of the outbreak, infection rates were more evenly spread throughout the county.
The highest infection rate is in the 79853 ZIP code in Tornillo and surrounding rural areas. It has eight confirmed COVID-19 cases in a population of under 5,000, giving it an infection rate of almost 18 per 10,000 people. The second-highest infection rate is in 79905 in South-Central El Paso, with 12.3 COVID-19 cases for every 10,000 people. An outbreak among patients and staff at the El Paso Psychiatric Center may be driving the high infection rate in 79905.
The infection rate countywide is 6.8 per 10,000 residents.
The 79935 Zip code, in a wedge east of El Paso International Airport between Yarborough and Lee Trevino, has an infection rate of 11.3 per 10,000 residents. The 79938 ZIP code in Far East El Paso, the second-most populous in the county, has an infection rate of 10.3 per 10,000 people.

The only ZIP code without a reported positive COVID-19 case is 79901 in Downtown and South El Paso. The Anthony-Vinton 79821 ZIP code has a single case.
Fort Bliss ZIP codes are not included in this analysis. The Army is testing people at Fort Bliss. The Defense Department has told individual military installations not to make public their number of positive tests out of concern that potential enemies could use that information.
