This is your Friday Update, which takes a quick look at some developments that El Paso Matters is following.

Sean Haggerty Drive Extension: Sean Haggerty Drive in Northeast El Paso is about to undergo a $22.4 million expansion and the city is looking for input on its design. A community meeting on the street’s improvement was held Thursday, however, anyone wishing to provide input can submit written comments by mail to the City of El Paso, 218 N. Campbell, El Paso, Texas, 79901, attn: Ismael Cepeda or by email to cepedaji@elpasotexas.gov. All comments must be received by Aug. 25. The expansion project will be from Nathan Bay Drive to Dyer Street. The project includes the construction of a new four-lane bridge, roadway approaches, pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, aesthetic lighting, illumination, a canopy bridge structure and drainage structures.

El Paso Airport to Install Solar Panels: The El Paso International Airport is getting a $3 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to install solar panels and a $360,000 grant to develop an Airport Sustainability Master Plan. The solar panels will be installed at the Rental Car Center and should provide enough power to offset the airport’s usage. The airport will work with the city’s recently established Office of Climate and Sustainability to incorporate its sustainability plan into the city’s Climate Action Plan. The El Paso airport is one of 21 across the nation to receive a grant from the FAA, which has awarded $92 million to airports nationwide as part of the federal government’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

El Paso Electric Chairman: Longtime El Paso businessman Edward Escudero is the new chairman of the El Paso Electric Board of Directors. Escudero previously served as vice chairman and replaces Frank Cassidy following Cassidy’s retirement. Escudero, who has been a part of EPE’s board since 2012, is the first local representative to be appointed chairman of the utility’s board. He is currently president and CEO of High Desert Capital, LLC.
