Since 2017, The Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus in Northwest El Paso has been caring for El Paso and Southern New Mexico residents. In that time, it has expanded access to needed care and services for the area and is generating the next generation of health care providers through their medical resident program.

The Transmountain Campus officially opened its doors in January 2017 to help ensure patients of this region had access to the care they need close to home. The campus is also recognized as one of the nation’s newest teaching hospitals in collaboration with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso..

“This has been a multi-year journey to implement and develop this campus to what it is today offering our neighbors and loved one’s in the area easier access to the high-quality care they need,” said David Byrd, chief executive officer for the Transmountain Campus. “Our goal for the Transmountain Campus was and is to make this an academic facility to serve as a catalyst to generate the next generation of healthcare providers for our region and this spring our mission will come to fruition as we prepare to graduate our first cohort of medical residents from our program with the hopes of keeping them in El Paso to practice medicine.”

In 2021, the Transmountain Campus welcomed its inaugural cohort of 14 residents to train in the specialties of psychiatry and internal medicine. The following year the program was expanded, welcoming the second cohort of residents in the specialty of family medicine. Residents have unique training and research opportunities to give them valuable hands-on experience. When mature, the program is projected to have over 70 residents in total.

“Over these last seven years, our team has made vast achievements to improve the care we provide along with needed investments to expand care,” Byrd said. “We continue to grow and have proudly invested and unveiled a new neonatal intensive care unit to care for babies born with illnesses or prematurely, along with opening a state-of-the-art outpatient therapy center offering rehabilitative care and services. In early 2024, patients with rheumatologic disorders will be able to receive infusion treatments at our campus.”

As a medical campus, The Transmountain Campus features a 106-bed acute care hospital, along with a medical office building housing physician clinics in various specialties to include urology, gynecology, orthopedics, maternal fetal medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, rheumatology, internal medicine, pulmonology and gastroenterology.

“Recruiting physicians to these clinics has been critically important to ensure having the needed specialists to also care for patients within the hospital,” Byrd said. “Recently, we proudly implemented our cardiology program with the introduction of two new interventional cardiologists and one non-interventional cardiologist – this is a huge win for our Northwest El Paso community and for our patients.”

The Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus is recognized as a Robotic Surgery Epicenter of Excellence specializing in urogynecology and the campus has made large investments to expand their robotics program and technology. The campus also was recently recognized as El Paso’s first and only designated geriatric emergency department, offering a specialized program in caring for an older adult population.

“Our campus is generating the next generation of healthcare providers and creating opportunities for those wanting to join the medical field,” Byrd said. “This last fall, we were honored to implement our Project Search program with Canutillo ISD, providing opportunities for students with disabilities to learn relevant job skills to be able to gain active employment. These young adults have had a tremendous impact within our hospital – they have made us better caregivers and leaders.”

As Northwest El Paso continues to rapidly grow and develop, the Transmountain Campus is poised to grow with the community.

“We’ve always said as our community grows, we are committed to growing with it to ensure across all areas of town that our loved ones have access to the needed care within their neighborhood,” said Nicholas Tejeda, Western Group president for Tenet Healthcare. “We are proud to be a part of this community and look forward to continued investment and expansion for the betterment of the people we serve.”
